Dr. Sébastien Guillet

Curriculum Vitae

Sébastien is a paleoclimatologist and physical geographer seeking to better understand how climate has varied over the Holocene. To reconstruct past climate variability and put the recent warming into perspective, he uses several natural archives or proxies such as tree-ring and ice core records. He is also a historical climatologist studying in the documentary records meteorological extremes, natural hazards as well as their impacts upon past societies.

Sébastien received a Bachelor in geography and history in 2010, and a Master in physical geography in 2012, from University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He was awarded a PhD in earth sciences by the University of Bern in 2017. In his doctoral work, he investigated the impacts of the 12th and 13th century volcanic eruptions upon North Hemisphere climates.

Sébastien is a scientific collaborator at the University of Geneva’s Institute for Environmental Sciences (ISE), where he teaches about climate change, paleoclimatology, dendrochronology and dendroclimatology.

Research interests

  • Dendrochronology: Development of millennium-long tree-ring chronologies
  • Dendroclimatology: De-trending, tree-ring-based climate reconstructions
  • Dendrogeomorphology: Tree-ring based reconstructions of avalanche activity
  • Environmental history: Exposure, vulnerability and resilience of human societies to climate- and weather-related disasters
  • Historical climatology: Climate reconstructions using historical records (Europe, Asia).
  • Paleoclimatology: Large-scale multi-proxy reconstructions over the Holocene.
